Tripura CM: “We’re Introducing Sex Education in Classes VIII–XII”

By Nimcy Manu

In a landmark move toward progressive youth education, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has announced the inclusion of comprehensive sex education and HIV/AIDS awareness in the school curriculum for students from Classes VIII to XII.

This announcement comes amid a concerning rise in HIV infections, especially among adolescents, and reflects a growing urgency to equip young people with the knowledge they need to make safe, informed choices.

Why the Move Is Important

Tripura currently reports an average of 120 new HIV cases each month, many of which are among teenage injecting drug users. Recognizing this alarming trend, the government is now taking action to ensure students understand both the risks of unprotected sex and the dangers of drug abuse.

Chief Minister Saha stated, “This is not a matter of controversy—it is a necessity.” He added that the state is committed to building a healthy, informed generation, and that sex education will help address issues of early sexual activity, unsafe practices, and misinformation among teenagers.

Education with a Broader Focus

While the curriculum will certainly cover topics like reproductive health, safe sex, consent, and protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it will also take a holistic approach. The program aims to include discussions on:

  • Substance abuse prevention
  • Mental health and emotional well-being
  • Healthy relationships
  • Body autonomy and self-respect

This comprehensive model is designed not just to inform, but to empower students in a respectful and age-appropriate way.

Red Ribbon Clubs and Youth Engagement

Tripura has been a pioneer in awareness programs, with the state’s Red Ribbon Clubs—student-led groups that focus on HIV awareness—already active in many schools. These clubs will now be further supported through structured education and outreach initiatives.

To scale this effort, Chief Minister Saha has urged all state MLAs to allocate ₹1 lakh annually from their local area development (LAD) funds to back youth-centric awareness programs. These funds will go toward activities like community workshops, student ambassador training, and development of resource materials.

Not Just Education—A Cultural Shift

By initiating this curriculum, the Tripura government is also aiming to destigmatize conversations around sex and sexuality—a topic often considered taboo in Indian households and schools. Encouraging open, medically accurate, and age-relevant discussions within the education system is a critical step toward reducing shame and secrecy around sexual health.

Dr. Saha emphasized the importance of sports, cultural activities, and creative engagements to keep youth positively involved and mentally engaged. These are seen as parallel strategies to reduce vulnerability to substance abuse and early risky behavior.

What This Means for the Future

If successfully implemented, this move could pave the way for a nationwide shift toward a healthier, more open culture around sex and relationships.
